Review: GGOOLLDD at Majestic Theatre Detroit – 3.14.18

by Mikel Pfeiffer

I first saw GGOOLLDD a couple years ago at Secret Friends Fest. They were one of the bands I didn’t know and came away impressed with their sound and stage presence. When I saw they were opening for OMD, who are one of my 80‘s favorite bands that I still enjoy seeing play these days, it made the show double the pleasure (double the fun!).

Since it was a sellout, GGOOLLDD got to play on Majestic’s immense stage in front of a large crowd. Vocalist Margaret Butler, who always wears terrific and unique outfits, did not disappoint with her clear, unicorn skirt and white one-piece top. Throughout their set she had a fun time dancing around in her lighted-sole sneakers. They played songs from their new EP Teeth which is a good mix of indie pop with lots of hooks and some quirkiness to keep things interesting. The highlight of the night came when Margaret put on a gold lighted cape and moved around the stage waving the cape like a golden phoenix. The crowd reaction GGOOLLDD was glowing and several people asked me who the band was so they could seek out more of their music.

I should probably also mention OMD’s set was amazing!
