Must See Concerts in Detroit – May 2017

Must See May

This month is probably the best month for concerts EVER in Detroit. We have HUGE stars coming to the Palace, incredible indie acts playing intimate shows, and mainstream success at the mid-sized venues, not to mention the best techno festival in the country in the Hart (Plaza) of Detroit! May is the month to spend your graduation money on concert tickets.

The XX

Where: Masonic Temple Theatre
When: May 2
Why: The XX are one of the best bands out there. We reviewed their new album, I See You, and it is a masterpiece. You cannot miss this show.

Mike Posner

Where: St. Andrew’s Hall
When: May 2
Why: Taking pills in Detroit.

Jessica Hernandez and The Deltas

Where: St. Andrew’s Hall
When: May 5
Why: Support your local rockstars! The soulful pop group always bring the goods.

The Black Angels

Where: St. Andrew’s Hall
When: May 7
Why: Maybe save some of those pills you took in Ibiza for The Black Angels show. Psychedelic.

Mac DeMarco

Where: Royal Oak Music Theatre
When: May 14
Why: The Canadian singer-songwriter has been described as the following: “blue wave”, “slacker rock” and (self-described) “jizz jazz”. Things are going to get weird.

Skating Polly

Where: The Magic Stick
When: May 14
Why: Because you can’t see Nirvana play live shows anymore. Expose yourself to Skating Polly’s “Ugly Pop” to restore your faith in modern day music. Rounded out the bill this night are the headliners Red City Radio as well as The Bombpops! and Russian Girlfriends.

Mastodon and Eagle of Death Metal

Where: Royal Oak Music Theatre
When: May 16
Why: Heavy AF.

Where: Fox Theater
When: May 17
Why: They had a never ending string of classic 90s Seattle grunge hits, and they are probably going to play them all.

Where: Royal Oak Music Theatre
When: May 17
Why: Speaking of classic 90s hits… What the hell are we going to do here? Soundgarden and Bush on the same night? Decisions, decisions….

Chance The Rapper

Where: The Palace of Auburn Hills
When: May 18
Why: His last trip to Detroit was incredible. There’s no way we are missing a chance (heh) to see him again.

The Orwells

Where: El Club
When: May 18
Why: The Orwells put on a riot of a show. The Chicago rockers are wild and unpredictable, and El Club is the perfect place to catch them. This song isn’t from their latest release, Terrible Human Beings, but it will make up your mind to go see them if you happen to be on the fence.

Where: The Fillmore
When: May 21
Why: They’ve been around for a surprising amount of time and they still rock just as much as ever.

The 1975

Where: The Fillmore
When: May 22
Why: Easily HWID’s favorite band. We got into a Royal Rumble style melee to decide who gets to cover The 1975 this time around. They are always a great time, so the fighting is to be expected.

The Weeknd

Where: Palace of Auburn Hills
When: May 24
Why: We didn’t think he could top his last album Beauty Behind the Madness, but he’s a mother f**king Starboy, so anything’s possible.

Future, Migos, Tory Lanez

Where: DTE Music Theater
When: May 28
Why: The three most hyped new names in hip-hop are all sharing the stage at our favorite venue in Michigan…yeah, we’ll be there.

Movement Festival

Where: Hart Plaza
When: May 27-29
Why: Summer doesn’t start until Movement Festival.

See you around, Detroit!
