Ingrid Michaelson graced Detroit again with her presence at Royal Oak Music Theatre in support of her latest project, Ingrid Michaelson’s Songs for the Season. She’s finishing up her tour, The Ingrid Michaelson Trio Presents: Songs for the Season, and, wow, she was right that is mouthful (ha!). Saying her tour’s title can fill in a lot of space, and Ingrid did the same at Royal Oak Music Theatre with her gorgeous and powerful voice. The audience, per usual, left her show super satisfied, yet willing to listen for hours more if it were possible.
This holiday show was the perfect way to start the season off here in Detroit. Ingrid sang a lot of songs off her new record including treating the audience to her rendition of “All I Want For Christmas Is You” live for the first time. “Happy, Happy Christmas,” was the only new song wrote for the album. It’s not the typical upbeat and happy Christmas song that title would suggest, though. It’s a beautiful ballad about loving the ones who love you and how time passes. An extra quiet hush went over the audience as Ingrid performed this one and it was a very special moment in the theatre – a beautiful song to be heard live!
She touched on a little bit of everything for her fans to make it a truly enjoyable show. The Sara Bareilles co-written tune, “Winter Song,” (my favorite Christmas song if anyone wanted to know) sounded incredible live. “The Way I Am” and the hilarious anecdote that went along with it was a crowd favorite. “Girls Chase Boys” and “Can’t Help Falling In Love” were also part of the set fantastic set.
It was wonderful show and, of course, it did not lack in Ingrid anecdote’s between songs that we have come to know and love in . I’m pretty sure that with each tour Ms. Michaelson just gets keeps getting funnier. Why hasn’t she been both, host and musical guest, on Saturday Night Live yet? Come on, SNL, you’re missing out on comedy gold here!
It was a fantastic show – both for the music and the holiday vibes – I’m happy and ready for Christmas. The only thing that could make it better is if Santa makes my wish come true for more Ingrid Michaelson tour dates next year!
